Why should any words and deeds aimed at creating "Taiwan independence" be resolutely opposed?
           晩豚:2001-04-17 15:53        ン: system        輳苅

Foreign anti-China forces have always supported elements pushing for the "independence" of Taiwan. With appeasement and connivance from the Taiwan authorities, these elements have been vainly attempting to split Taiwan from China and "establish an independent country." This is a betrayal of Taiwan people's anti-imperialism, anti-colonialism and patriotic tradition and a betrayal of the common interests of the Chinese nation. It runs counter to the inevitability of China's reunification.

Since assuming power in Taiwan, Lee Teng-hui has taken an attitude of connivance and support toward "Taiwan independence." Activities advocating "Taiwan independence" have become open and legalized as a result. Many pro-"independence" ringleaders residing abroad have gone back to the island, forces in favor of "Taiwan independence" have grown in strength, and activities agitating for "Taiwan independence" have become rampant. The Democratic Progressive Party, which has "establishment of Taiwan as an independent country" as the central part of its party program, has become the headquarters of pro-"independence" forces within the island. These forces wildly clamor for "Taiwan independence" and the fostering of "independence onsciousness," promote campaigns in favor of "the independence of Taiwan sovereignty," and attempt to "join the United Nations under the name of Taiwan." Clamors and actions of this sort have directly sabotaged a normal development of cross-Straits relations and pose a serious danger for the reunification of the country. Whoever attempts to bring about "Taiwan independence" will be the chief culprit sabotaging China's reunification and will be condemned by the Chinese nation.

It is the common responsibility of Chinese compatriots on both sides of
the Taiwan Strait to oppose and prevent "Taiwan independence." They should wage a resolute struggle against any words or deeds that aim to bring about "Taiwan independence." Premier Li Peng solemnly declared in his speech: "As long as the Taiwan authorities persist in their activities to divide the motherland, we will not stop our struggle against their schemes for a single day.All consequences arising therefrom cannot but be borne entirely by those leaders of the Taiwan authorities who engage in separatist activities."
