History of dialogue between both sides of the Taiwan Strait

Shen Le just provided us with some insight into the three-day meeting. But now he looks back at the history of dialogue between both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

This is the sixth round of talks between the two leaders since the two sides resumed talks in June 2008.

In November 1992, the Association and the Foundation held talks in Hong Kong. The organizations reached what's called the "1992 Consensus,” that both sides would stick to the "one China" principle.

In June 2008, the Association and the Foundation leaders held their first talks since 1999 in Beijing. The two signed agreements on weekend charter flights and tourism.

In November that year, Chen Yunlin led a delegation to Taiwan for a five-day visit, and signed four agreements on direct shipping, air transport, and postal services and food safety.

The next April, Chen Yunlin and Chiang Pin-kung signed three agreements on starting regular flights, boosting cooperation in finance and cracking down on crime during their third talks in Nanjing, capital of the east China's Jiangsu Province. The two sides also reached a consensus to boost investment by mainland companies on the island.

In December last year, mainland and Taiwan negotiators agreed to cooperate in farm produce quarantine and cross-Strait employment of fishermen, as well as dealing with different product quality standards.

In June this year, the two organizations held their fifth round of talks in Chongqing. The two leaders signed an Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement or ECFA and an agreement on intellectual property rights protection.

The sixth talks are expected to include discussions on medical cooperation, as well as the establishment of investment protocols. This protocol could provide Taiwan businessmen operating in Chinese mainland with greater investment protection.

CCTV reporter Shen Le said, "The two negotiators are also expected to tackle the creation of a cross-strait Economic Cooperation Committee. The issue was mandated in the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, also known as ECFA signed during the last round of talks in Chongqing."
